The Book Thief

I recently finished this book and it left an indelible impression on me. It is set during World War II in a small town in Germany. The book's narrator is the grim reaper, a surprisingly gentle harvester of souls. The main character is a young, German girl whose brother has died and whose mother leaves her in foster care in a strange town with strange people because she cannot afford to clothe and feed her. The book celebrates the importance of books and words, the enduring relationships that develop between the unlikeliest of people and the suffering of everyone in Germany at this time, Jews and gentiles alike. It is filled with feelings, colors, memorable moments, love and loss. It is haunting. Try it.

Book Feature

We're planning to post short reviews of books we are reading that might appeal to students and staff. The first one is for Jonathan Safran Foer's latest title, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Link to all of these reviews from the library media center homepage. Keep checking back for more.
